“Hernia, is a preventable killer. Although most hernias aren’t immediately life-threatening, but they may require surgery to prevent potentially dangerous complications. Risk of death rate is 7-10 times higher if the hernia is operated in emergency as compared to planned Hernia Surgery where it is less than 0.05%.”
The experts from Max Super Specialty Hospital, Shalimarbagh, New Delhi stated this while addressing a press conference at a hotel here today.
Dr KK Trehan, director general & laparoscopic surgery said what causes death in patients, is strangulation of intestine which gets trapped in the hernia. They leave their normal position & comes into a gap or hole in the abdominal wall. The Intestine gets trapped in the hernia opening and blood supply is cut off causing Gangrene of intestine.
Dr. Satish Tyagi said, around 2-cr (1.7%) people have abdominal wall hernias in India. Death due to hernia is far more in South-East Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri-Lanka as compared to the rest of the world . Studies reveal that 50% of hernias present in emergency with obstruction. Untreated and strangulated hernias carry a death risk of 10-15% in younger age group which increases to 50-55% in older age group in emergency surgery.
